South Jordan is one of the many cities of Salt Lake County, Utah, USA. It is also part of the Salt Lake City, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. From the early 1990s, the city of South Jordan has been among Utah's fastest growing cities. Recently, a land development company (Kennecott Land) has commenced with the construction of a master-community for the city's western half.

History of South Jordan, Utah

Early Mormon settlement of the South Jordan region occurred in July of 1857. The first pioneer landowner of South Jordan was Alexander Beckstead. Together with his family he began to irrigate the land by diverting water from the Jordan River. The Beckstead's first home was a dug out cave from the river bank. The Beckstead family also constructed the Beckstead Ditch which still exists today. The White Faun Flour Mill was built in 1895 and it was the city's first mill. However, in 1902 the mill was burned down. It wasn't until 1935 when South Jordan was incorporated as a town. The town of South Jordan was a prosperous agricultural community. From 1960-1970 the population of South Jordan had more than doubled. Since the 1970s the city experienced a growth and development boom.

As of 2000, it was determined that the City of South Jordan held about 29,437 people, 7,507 households, and 6,771 families. The racial demographics of the city was 95.51% White, 0.30% African-American, 0.10% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.48% Pacific Islander, 1.29% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. 3.27% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race. The median income for a household then was $75,433, and the median income for a family was $76,809. The city's per capita income then was $20,938.
